#NewFaceofTech Scholarship Campaign Goes Live on International Women's Day

By Victoria Robertson on March 8, 2018

We are coming to a point in society in which the glass ceiling is shattering and women are taking the initiative to fight for equal rights in the workplace and in everyday life. As a student, encouraging and participating in this initiative is imperative to its sustained success.

That’s why the new challenge posed by HARMAN International and the 1,000 Dreams Fund should be of interest to you.

In conjunction, these two organizations are launching the #NewFaceofTech challenge which aims to support young women to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM).

The challenge invites young women seeking careers in STEAM to demonstrate how they represent the #NewFaceofTech by “snapping a photo and sharing a personal account of how they plan to put the grant funding to work in achieving their STEAM goals,” according to a recent press release.

In doing so, ten finalists will be chosen by 1,000 Dream Fund. From here, there will be a week-long, public vote (April 9 through 12) to determine five grant recipients who will receive $2,000 in grants, career coaching sessions and JBL product.

This will be the second year of this campaign and it will run from March 8 through April 5 of 2018. The campaign kicks off this year on International Women’s Day at a private event, and winners will be featured online as #TheNewFaceofTech by 1,000 Dreams. The winners will be announced on April 16 of this year, and all ten finalists will receive JBL Everest 110 headphones.

The winners from last year’s campaign, Chinasa Okolo and Brenda Estrada, are currently preparing for PhD studies in computer science and pursuing studies in financial technology, respectively.

HARMAN International is a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. that connects technologies for automotive, consumer and enterprise markets while the 1,000 Dreams Fund is a national scholarship program for young women.

According to the press release, “women in top leadership roles across American companies hold just 5.2 percent of all CEO positions with continued underrepresentation in tech.” For this reason, such a campaign is essential to changing the way women are seen in the workplace.

According to Dinesh C. Paliwal, President and CEO of HARMAN, “HARMAN is proof that a diverse and inclusive workforce drives great innovation and propel business results. Building a pipeline of talent is the only way to ensure sustainable success and prosperity for companies, communities and the world. Through our recruiting and community outreach programs, we are seeing a bold and fearless generation, ready to tackle all the technical and business challenges in front of them, and it is incumbent upon us as today’s leaders to encourage and empower them to fulfill their potential. We are proud to kick off the second year of our partnership with 1,000 Dreams Fund to help provide a path for tomorrow’s inventors and leaders.”

Additionally, according to the founder and CEO of 1,000 Dreams Fund, “We are thrilled to expand our partnership with HARMAN, a leader not just in technology but also in advancing female executives and engineers. Together, we are accelerating our mission to equip young women with the tools they need most to achieve their goals in STEAM. Our #NewFaceofTech Challenge is intended to inspire and uplift all of the young women who are courageously pursuing their dreams in the arts and sciences.”

What a way to celebrate International Women’s Day!
